Environment (including climate change)

The main objective of environment research under FP7 is to advance our knowledge on the interactions between climate, biosphere, ecosystems and human activities and to develop new technologies, tools and services, for the sustainable development of the environment and its resources.

Why is it important?

Environmental problems extend beyond national frontiers and require a coordinated approach at a pan-European and, often, global level. Europe needs to engage in a sustainable relationship with the environment while improving competitiveness and strengthening European industry. Sustainable management of the environment and its resources requires multidisciplinary and integrated research. The activities will also address policy needs such as the sustainability impact assessments of EU policies and the follow up to the Kyoto and post-Kyoto actions on climate change.

What will be funded?

Emphasis will be given to the following activities:

  • Climate change, pollution and risks
  • Pressures on the environment and climate
  • Environment and health
  • Natural hazards
  • Sustainable Management of Resources
  • Conservation and sustainable management of natural and man-made resources and biodiversity
  • Management of marine environments
  • Environmental Technologies
  • Environmental technologies for observation, simulation, prevention, mitigation, adaptation, remediation and restoration of the natural and man-made environment
  • Protection, conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, including human habitat improved damage assessment on cultural heritage
  • Technology assessment, verification and testing
  • Earth observation and assessment tools
  • Earth and ocean observation systems and monitoring methods for the environment and sustainable development
  • Forecasting methods and assessment tools for sustainable development taking into account differing scales of observation
Budget

The EU Member States have earmarked a total of € 1.8 billion for funding this theme over the duration of FP7.
